Davy Nguyen “My journey”

Reflecting back on that boat journey as an 8 year old, it was terrifying.

I can still recall when my dad told me that we were going to visit my grandparents for the weekend. My dad and I accompanied by my Auntie’s family walked through the jungles at night to avoid detection by the Vietnamese communist soldiers. We arrived at the waiting boat near the beach and I was placed on this boat with a lot of people who I didn’t know, leaving behind my mum and dad and three younger brothers.

As the boat drifted out from the shore my father screamed out that he will pray to Buddha to keep me safe on my journey and pray that we will meet again. From a distance I could see my dad break down and cry, that was the last time I saw him.

My life would never be the same again…

Our boat was quite small and overcrowded. You could see fear and angst in everyone’s eyes and hear people praying to their gods for help. People were sick, others vomiting, kids crying because they were hungry and in pain. Women and Men huddled in corners of the boat fearing they will die as 4 to 5 meter waves smashed into our boat. The boat rocked from side to side sending everybody flying. People were screaming and yelling out of frustration and fear that they would die at sea. At times our boat had to out run pirates. The females were scared they would get raped and the men killed as there were many stories how ruthless the pirates were. This was also another fear factor we had to deal with everyday. We were all dehydrated, hungry, thirsty and constantly feared that we could drown and die at sea.

Through the journey we were all rationed with a small portion of rice and a small cap of drinking water a day. As I was lying nearly lifeless underneath the deck by the engine bay, the smell of fumes and the constant engine noise drumming through my head added to my motion sickness. I was suffering terribly during the tough journey and I thought I would die as I could hear the adults talking. They were discussing whether they would throw me overboard as they thought I wouldn’t make it. As an 8 year old who has experienced all this act of madness at sea, do you think one can ever be normal again?

10 years later I was reunited with my family in Vietnam when I finally got the courage to go back. But life was never simple. I grew up resenting my family for sending me away at a young age. Life was hard growing up without your parents’ love, protection and guidance. 30 years later I still have not hugged my mum or dad and told them I love them. I experienced years of nightmares and I was traumatised by the experience from that boat journey.

Many years later, I’ve learnt that through our difficulties in life, it is acceptable to have disappointments. We all fall on hard times once in a while. After all we are human, we are not perfect, yet we need to learn how to pick ourselves up.  We can’t stay down forever (we need to take actions and fight for our dreams). By having me as your life coach we can work through these challenges together and “Bring Colourful Rainbows back into your life”
